Lan Su Chinese Garden
239 NW Everett St Downtown
Lan Su Chinese Garden is one of Portland's greatest treasures and most interesting sites to see while visiting Portland. A result of a collaboration between the cities of Portland and Suzhou, sister city in China.
Much more than just a botanical garden, Lan Su is a creative inspiration based on a 2,000-year-old Chinese tradition that melds art, architecture, design and nature in perfect harmony.
Once inside the garden's walls, you'll feel as if you've traveled through time to another era in a faraway world. Lan Su is a window into Chinese culture, history and way of thinking. Ever changing, Lan Su always has something new to offer - by the minute, by the hour, and with the seasons.
The Chinese garden is a garden of landscape character, in fact, it recreates a miniature landscape idealized and aims to express the harmony that should exist between man and nature. The rocks are carved as if they were eroded by atmospheric agents, the trees are reduced in size to be inserted in restricted contexts, is artificially recreate those visual balance that you have in nature.
It is surrounded by walls and divided into sectors, including docks, rocks, trees and flowers as well as an assortment of rooms and halls in places the very points of visual contemplation, connected by winding paths, bridges and tunnels. Moving from structure to structure you can see a series of carefully composed scenes, as if unrolling a scroll painting depicting a landscape.
The garden was built for pleasure and to impress, as in the great imperial gardens; to relax and escape from the real world, as in the most intimate gardens created by poets, scholars, former government officials, soldiers and merchants; both for reflection and prayer, so a contact with nature and the creator, as in the temples.
